Composition Roofing

Composition Shingles

Probably the most prevalent roofing material used on residential roofs during the last several decades is the composition shingle. Composition shingles are manufactured in a wide variety of styles and colors and vary significantly in price and warranty period. The two general classifications of composition shingles are the three-tab shingles (a.k.a. standard strip shingles) and architectural shingles (a. k. a. laminated shingles).

Three-Tab Shingles

So named for the three "tabs" appearing within the full width of each individual shingle, are the least expensive composition shingle offered. These shingles normally come with manufacturer's warranties ranging from 20 to 30 years.

The number of manufacturers producing three-tab shingles has however declined in recent years due largely to the increased demand for architectural shingles.

Architectural Shingles

These are the most popular composition shingle offered today. Heavier weights, longer warranty periods, greater thickness, unique color blends, three dimensional appearance, and shadow lines are some of the features contributing to their popularity. Manufacturer's warranties for architectural shingles range from 25-years to a lifetime and prices will vary from approximately the cost of a 25-year three-tab composition shingle to more than the cost of a cedar shake. Some of the most popular architectural shingles being installed on today's homes include Certainteed Landmark, Certainteed Presidential, Certainteed Carriage House, Certainteed Grand Manor, Elk Prestique, GAF Timberline, Owens Corning Oakridge, and Tamko Heritage composition shingles.
